Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of African Languages. Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2026. Mandaha, R. R. 2026. The influence of a political speaker’s credibility on the persuasiveness of a political speech: South African Context. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/a526bfc2-c26c-43cf-bda1-5dae775690d6 Communication is one of the important aspects of language, and so is the study of persuasion and its importance in this field. Thus, the study of the speaker’s credibility, as intended by this research, influences the persuasiveness of their message is worth researching. Over the years, scholars have conducted several research to establish the relationship between credibility and persuasion. It is therefore important to conduct this study to further investigate the extent to which persuasion is influenced by the credibility that the speaker holds with their audience. This research was conducted to answer this research question: How does the speaker’s credibility affect a persuasive message? Which is an important question that the language department should investigate amongst several other aspects that influence persuasion. Therefore, the main aim of this paper was to conduct a study on the impact of the speaker’s credibility on the persuasiveness of their message. Thus, the study was aimed at establishing the relationship that exists between credibility and persuasion as well as to investigate the extent to which credibility influences persuasion. The research method used for this study is the qualitative method where the public’s comments were analyzed with the intent to get a general idea of how the speaker’s credibility influenced the persuasiveness of their message or argument. This research method is best suited for this research because it allows for an analysis of text without relying on numerical data. The data was collected from several social media platforms, YouTube and Twitter, where people interacted with the speech under analysis. This data was the focus of data extraction and generalization of conclusions drawn in this research. After a careful analysis of data in relation to the literature that was reviewed, it was concluded from this research that indeed credibility plays a significant role in the message’s persuasiveness. Most of the results gathered from these platforms showed that the public’s attitudes towards the persuasive message came from the speaker’s credibility and thus determining persuasion.
