Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/9d7cea7d-a60a-46ec-91b8-b2d847e545c6 Climate change disproportionately impacts marginalised communities, particularly in South Africa, where rural populations face heightened vulnerability due to socio-economic conditions, apartheid legacies and reliance on natural resources. Addressing the impacts of climate change on marginalised communities requires effective climate change communication, and community-based organisations (CBOs) play a critical role in bridging communication between marginalised groups and broader climate initiatives, advocating for inclusivity and amplifying local priorities. However, the effectiveness of CBOs in representing marginalised voices within climate change narratives remains underexplored, particularly in South Africa. This study uses case studies of two South African CBOs, Climate Justice Coalition (CJC) and Southern African Faith Communities Environment Institute (SAFCEI) to investigate whether they effectively use Instagram images to prioritise marginalised voices and frame messages and elevate marginalised perspectives. By exploring these dynamics, the study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the role CBOs play in climate change discourse and the potential barriers they face in fostering equitable participation. Findings revealed CJC draws strength from its justiceoriented framing, invoking political aesthetics to express solidarity, yet it falls short in fully representing rural culture and lived realities. SAFCEI emphasizes adaptation and collective action but often disconnects these from systemic issues, limiting transformative potential. Ultimately the study argues that for CBOs to fully contribute to climate justice, they must adopt communication practices that remain accountable to communities, resist co-optation and ensure that their deliberate in embedding principles of knowledge co-production and participation in their visual depictions of rural voice.
