Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/29955380-a53f-45c0-a977-3fc3c2372183 Heatwaves are increasingly recognised as a critical climatic hazard, with South Africa warming at nearly twice the global average. Limpopo Province is particularly vulnerable due to its semi-arid climate, socio-economic inequalities, and reliance on climate-sensitive livelihoods. Within this context, Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) faces compounding risks across informal settlements, farming communities, and mining areas. The study examined community perceptions, household and livelihood impacts, coping and adaptation strategies, as well as institutional responses. A qualitative, participatory design was used, incorporating community workshops and semi-structured interviews. Key informants included municipal officials, councillors, community leaders, and representatives of a local NGO. Analysis showed that heatwaves were seen not only as environmental events but also as social and cultural experiences. Impacts included health problems, water insecurity, farming losses, and mining-related heat stress. Coping ranged from short-term adjustments to longterm solutions such as boreholes, tree planting, and resilient housing. Institutional responses highlighted the absence of early warning systems and fragmented governance. The study demonstrates the value of participatory tools in capturing lived experiences often missing from formal assessments. Conceptually, it contributes to CCA and DRR research by emphasising cultural framings of risk, introducing the idea of “double exposure” to describe combined household and occupational heat stress in mining communities, and highlighting cooperation as a basis for resilience. Practically, it points to ways of strengthening governance, integrating indigenous knowledge, and aligning planning with community priorities, showing that resilience can be built in culturally resonant, socially just, and sustainable ways.
