Dept. of Information Science. Work Labor Retirement Retirement -- Great Britain Social surveys -- Great Britain Dissertations -- Information science Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study seeks to re-conceptualise retirement in industrialised and post-industrialised countries, based on an empirical and theoretical exploration of the consequences of change in the 'working life' on retirement. The study found, within limitations, that work is transforming from a stable long-term form into a more flexible pattern, and retirement is tending to merge with work within a similar flexible framework. The hypothesis that people are engineering their own form of retirement was tested and found valid within the context of the study.
