ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate certain film sound theories on the basis of a graphical representation of the soundtrack of the South African film, Paljas. Film sound theories of Rudolf Arnheim (1904-), Siegfried Kracauer (1889-1966) and Bela Balazs (1884-1949) were discussed. This study concentrated on the following aspects: film sound theories, under which three soundtrack elements, music, sound effects and dialogue were discussed, and a graphical representation that linked with the disciplines of technology, analysis, transcription, notation and symbols, digital sign processing and software. In demarcating the study it is important to bear in mind that the technological development of the film soundtrack with its soundtrack elements, the harmonious content of the music, the creative process of the sound effects and the literary value of the dialogue all lie outside the scope of this study. The graphical representation denoted a film sound theoretical interpretation of this film soundtrack. Three soundtrack elements were identified, and fitting and accessible symbols were used and/or created for the various film sounds. A spectrographic analysis of the soundtrack was undertaken and integrated in the graphical representation to provide additional information to the researcher and the reader. By using a graphical representation the interaction of the relevant three soundtrack elements was studied and deductions made by means of a comparative analytical process. It was established in general that it makes sense to study synchronisation techniques on the basis of a graphical representation. The visual aspect of the graphical representation allows the soundtrack to become more accessible for the researcher and the reader with a view to graphically studying film sound theories, for example the use of synchronisation techniques.
