The general availability of high resolution CCD sensors make them useful elements in the development of commercial applications with observation as primary objective. The ability of two dimensional CCD sensors to cover a relative large area in a single snapshot makes them much more attractive for observational tasks than linear sensors. Linear CCD sensors have advantages over matrix CCD sensors when long range, high resolution observations are performed. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the possible use of linear CCD sensors in commercial surveillance applications, develop a prototype implementation and perform an initial evaluation of the system. A scanner was developed to observe aircraft at a distance of 10km with an update rate of less than 5 seconds. The final goal of this surveillance system is to determine the angular coordinates of the detected object with reference to the observer. An extensive study on the potential of linear sensors, surveillance through the atmosphere and optical systems are supplemented with the design of a detection unit, recognition unit and an image capture card to determine the feasibility of the system.
