Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Microwave heating Dissertations -- Electrical engineering Dissertation (Ph.D.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. The thesis presents thorough analytical, experimental and numerical field studies inside two of the widely used microwave cavities, namely, the single and the multimode cavities. The first part of the thesis concentrates on the multimode cavity. Because of inconsistencies found in the literature, the empty cavity is dealt with first. This also sets the background for the cavity under loaded conditions. A simple, novel, cheap, non-invasive, non-perturbing method based on probing the electric field is tested in both situations. In the case of the loaded cavity, the technique is extended to medium/high power to take into account the changing effect of the load's properties on the electric field. Successful correlation between experimental and numerical results has been achieved with extensive meshing of the simulated model at a considerable cost in terms of time and computer resources.
