The main aim of this study is to determine whether the conference between teacher and learner during the teaching of writing can promote interest and possible improvement in writing skills by presenting an overview of the relevant literature and a study project done at secondary school level under South African circumstances. The process-oriented approach to the teaching of writing has altered the role of the teacher. He is no longer evaluator of an end product but guides the learner along the writing process. The conference is a technique that suits the process-orientated approach and the new frame of thought regarding teaching because teacher and learner talk about the unique writing processes of the learner during all the phases of the writing process. The study project was undertaken to determine the application possibilities of the conference in a grade 10 classroom. The project confirms that the conference has a positive influence on learners' writing skills, their attitude towards writing, their relationship with the teacher and the self concept.
