This thesis investigates the semantic content of the root קוה in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible by employing the semantic word-field theory. The following deductions can be made on account of this study: 1. Concerning the semantic word-field theory: to determine the semantic relations of קוה with words to which it is related, it was necessary to know which synonyms are used. Mainly two synonyms are used: חכה and יחל. קוה is used in the following contexts: lawsuits, distress and theophany. 2. Concerning the significances of קוה in the text corpus which isinvestigated: a) When God is the subject, then קוה signifies that a certain initiative desires a certain outcome ("await, expect"). b) In cases of distress of different types (sickness, droughts, spirituaal darkness, exile, sentence, etc.), קוה indicates the prospect/hope for the best for the change of these circumstances. Here the subject always human and Jahwe (or attributes of Him, for example his Name, his arm, etc.) always the object. c) Due to the fact that Yahweh is closely connected with קוה , in some lat texts He becomes equated with קוה.
