| spelling | oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/50989 MASA and apartheid : the role of the institutionally organised South African medical profession in response to human rights violations within the Apartheid era, with special emphasis on the response of the Medical Association of South Africa (MASA) to the death of Steve Biko Damster, Gavin Paul Van Niekerk, A. Biko, Steve, -- 1946-1977 Human rights -- South Africa Medicine -- South Africa Medical ethics -- South Africa South Africa -- Politics and government Dissertations -- Political science Thesis (M. Phil.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. The Medical Association of South Africa (MASA) was formed in 1927, having been established by the British Medical Association in 1880. MASA was an existing organisation who saw the introduction and the implementation of Apartheid in South Africa, particularly the years between 1950 and 1990. Over this time a number of gross human rights violations involving the medical profession and Apartheid occurred, including the death of Mr. Steve Biko at the hands of security police (an incident in which 2 doctors deliberately falsified evidence). Over this same period of time the medical profession - and their representative association (MASA) - were supposedly representing the medical profession, and acting on behalf of doctors. Yet it appears as if very little was done by MASA to address these and other related issues.
