Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Industrial Psychology. Interpersonal relations Industrial relations Trust Dissertations -- Industrial psychology Thesis (M.Comm.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. Trust is an essential element of all social exchange relationships and collective actions. Organizational scholars have noted that coordination and authority rest upon a foundation of trust. The importance of trust has been recognized in such areas as communication, leadership, negotiation, performance appraisal and a labour-management relations. However, in many organizations the level of interpersonal trust is low - particularly between managers and subordinates. the study of interpersonal trust in organizations has remained problematic for several reasons, namely concerning the definition of trust itself, a lack of clarity in the relationship between trust and risks, confusion between trust and the party to be trusted. In this context the development of a model of interpersonal trust in organizations by Mayer et al. (1995) is both timely and practical. this dyadic model of interpersonal trust can resolve the above-mentioned problems associated with the study of trust in organizations and can clarify the relationship between a specific trustor and trustee.
