The objective of this study is the interpretation and evaluation of the communicative event of which the text of 1 Thessalonians is the concrete evidence, and the methodological problems in making such an interpretation and evaluation. A method of rhetorical criticism is spelled out and applied to 1 Thessalonians. The method concerns an analysis and interpretation with the focus on the text, author and readers and an evaluation of the effectiveness of the rhetorical act of 1 Thessalonians. The text is evaluated with regard to the criteria of truth, aesthetics, ethics and effect. It is established that the rhetorical act constituted by 1 Thessalonians has a potential to move the original readers towards the acceptance of those values and propositions that the author argued for in the letter. The use of androcentric language in the letter, however, emerged as a possible stumbling block in the effectiveness of the letter.
