This study examined the validity of the South African Police Debriefing Model as developed by Jacobs (1992). The debriefing intervention was implemented to address the high occurrence of stress and post traumatic stress within the South African Police Service. The study was launched in 1994 and involved two hundred policemen who have been involved in traumatic work related incidents. One half of the group had been debriefed and constituted the experimental group. The other half of the group never received any crisis counselling and represented the control group. both groups were asked to complete a questionnaire more than six weeks following the trauma incident they were involved in. The Revised Impact of Event Scale (TRIES) by Esprey and Friedman (1993) was included in the measuring instrument to establish whether there was any differences in the degree of PTS symptomology between the two groups. Significant differences were found on the PTS-scores between the experimental and control groups. Qualitative findings also suggested the positive value of the intervention.
