spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/54660 A phenomenological study of the cross-cultural experience of fear within the context of South Africa violence Goulding, Leigh-Anne Linda De Vos, H. M. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Fear Fear -- Cross-cultural studies Violence -- South Africa Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (MA) -- Stellenbosch University, 1995. This thesis broadly addresses the issue of human diversity within the context of South African psychology. The controversy regarding the cultural legitimacy of mainstream South African psychology was chosen as a central theme. In particular, the problems with the application of a Western-based model of psychology within the South African context of cultural diversity was explored. The central tenet of cultural psychology (there are cultural determinants of mind and behaviour and psychological differences exist between the carriers of different cultures) was contrasted with the philosophical underpinnings of mainstream Western psychology (a belief in the continuity of human experience regardless of ethnic differences and the universal applicability of the psychological model). This study isolates one aspect of this debate and focusses on the role played by culture in the experience of human emotion. The general aim of this thesis was to describe and contrast the experience of fear across cultures within the context of interpersonal violence. The phenomenological method (Duquesne method) was chosen as the method of research because of its meaningful contribution to the understanding of the subjective experience of individuals across cultures. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of culture on the experience of emotion and to apply this to therapeutic practice within South Africa. The study found that although the experience of fear within the context of interpersonal violence contained a number of universal features across cultures, culturally-specific features were also present. It was concluded that both universal features and culturally-specific features of the experience of an emotion had to be taken into account within the therapeutic situation in order to promote optimal intercultural understanding.
