Admin.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1995. The social, political and economic transformation in South Africa has not yet been matched by an integrated approach to management. South African managers have yet to recognise and harness the full potential of African employees, with their cultural, economic and personal differences. Whites have designed primarily exclusive institutions which give preference to the individual, his development and self-fulfilment. Blacks, on the other hand, believe that man is very much part of the societal fabric and see the need for each individual to find his place in a societal structure, to play his particular role in it and, to a large extent, subordinate himself to the societal needs. In other words, he desires organisations to be inclusive. South African companies adopted scientific approaches to management, which led to the annihilation of the African world-view, destroying its dignity and self-respect, and causing an inferiority complex which further reinforced a sense of hopelessness amongst the masses. The ideologies of the two worlds of white and black are therefore totally mismatched and people should come to terms with each others differences, acknowledge them and then realise their common values to succeed in business in the new South Africa. Everyone has a value system which shapes his/her world-view. It is based on a system of beliefs and human experiences within a framework of background education, environmental interaction, upbringing and culture. Therefore, in South Africa it does not take much to realise that many ills can sprout from the misunderstanding of each other's value systems and that abuse by the first world of management power in the workplace can cause immense polarisation. This polarisation is the root cause of our low productivity and bad performance. The challenge for organisations in the new South Africa, therefore, is to find unity in diversity by respecting and acknowledging different value systems, discovering one another's limitations and seeking common values. The openness required for such an exercise will inevitably lead to greater levels of trust and respect between all stakeholders. What appears to be needed is a corporate culture that recognises, appreciates and integrates Eurocentric (individualistic, exclusive) values, as well as Afrocentric (social, inclusive) values into their daily management practices, structures and systems. This will without doubt, lead to higher productivity, competitiveness and profitability.
