The almost daily augmentation of the breach between informal languages and standard language has naturally led to a similar breach between extremely conservative written language and the modern day informal language. Standard Afrikaans as representative of the Afrikaans written language has reached a turning point concerning its social role as well as its relationship towards the informal language. Extensive borrowing from English has become a daily occurance in the informal language. In my research I show that the informal language is a resource for the written language, and base this conclusion on a study of the language used in magazines, which has caused Standard Afrikaans to become less formal. A language can never be separated from its symbolic value and therefore the standard language has to go through a period of adjustment. Many speakers cannot identify with Standard Afrikaans as it implies conservatism and has been labelled as the "apartheid" language. A new standard language has to develop which is less formal so that it may assure its rightful place next to English.
