Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Anorexia nervosa -- Psychological aspects Bulimia -- Psychological aspects Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1995. A review of the literature revealed a need for further research about dysfunctional cognitions in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. There was a specific need to identify and compare the dysfunctional cognitions associated with the subtypes of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa because of the following reasons: (a) Previous research about dysfunctional cognitions in the different subtypes of anorexia nervosa used criteria which differ form the current DSM-IV criteria (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) to differentiate subtypes, and (b) research about dysfunctional cognitions in the subtypes of bulimia nervosa could not be found in the literature. The study therefore aimed to identify and compare dysfunctional cognitions and disturbed eating-related attitudes and behaviour in anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and their subtypes. The study consisted of 59 subjects. The sample was divided into anorexia nervosa (n = 20) and bulimia nervosa (n = 19) patients, and a normal population group (n = 20). Anorexic and bulimic patients were further divided into four subgroups, namely anorexia nervosa restricting type (n = 12), anorexia nervosa binge-eating/purging type (n = 8), bulimia nervosa purging type (n = 13) and bulimia nervosa nonpurging type (n = 6).
