A study was undertaken to investigate why there is such a major backlog in teaching and therefore a serious andragogic need in black communities.It appears as if the yearning of people, the realities of humankind, and the worth of human beings of the greatest part of the South African population, have not been taken into consideration, which has had some devastating consequences.It is clear that most of the inhabitants of the country did not accept the education system and its legitimacy. This resulted in frustration, protest and revolt.The revolt resulted in a number of negativities. Education was plunged into a crisis, a "lost generation", that was marganilized, sprang up, and the erosion of the culture of learning and violence increased dramatically. Illiteracy also became rampant.Attention will be given to alternative education, which was offered to replace apartheid education, although with no avail.A study of the community of Hanover Park was undertaken to determine exactly what the shortcomings in the community are. The different problems experienced by this community appear to be the symptoms of profound underlying problems.The shortcomings in the education system are highlighted and recent education reports are discussed, as well as the proposals put forward as possible remedies. Attention is given to adult education, non formal education, lifelong and continuing education as well as the integration of education and training.Lastly, ways of how to deal with the problems of the deprived at different levels, are discussed, in order to stabilise society,so that education can be normalized.
