Ing.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1995. This thesis describes the design and development of a hypertext-package. The package include information according to welding in general and four selected welding processes. Hypertext is medium used through which the user explores and interacts with knowledge. The user can decide which route to take, because a lot of navigation mediums exist within such a package. Through the click of a button the user can move between different objects. These objects could contain -text, -graphics, -sound, -animation, and -video. Welding, with all the different techniques, is an old method for joining different metals (or materials). The metal pieces are heated till the welding area is melted, then the different pieces of melted metal join or a specific filler metal could be used for the joining process. First a literature studies were done on hypertext, welding in general and the four selected welding processes. Different hypertext packages were evaluated and the HyperTrack system from Kennith Liew was selected. This system operates within the MS WINDOWS environment and the possibilities for the future are enormous. The greatest advantage of the HyperTrack system is the opening of an additional window to view the hierarchical structure of the document. The fact of getting lost with the hypertext environment is now part of the past. The application is a prototype that can be used during future development. The main contents of the application include text and graphics, while other multimedia aspect could be added during the future.
