ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An exploratory study relating to participation in decision-making by social work middle managers in performing the administrative function was undertaken. A literature survey was conducted concerning decision-making by social work middle managers, organisational structure and the administrative function. An empirical study based on the literature study was performed on a test sample comprising thirteen private welfare organisation in Cape Town. The empirical study examined and described decision-making by social work middle managers, the organisational structure in which decisions are made and decision-making specifically related to the administrative function. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Verkennende studie is onderneem oor deelnemende besluitneming deur maatskaplike werkmiddelvlakbestuurders tydens die uitvoering van die administratiewe funksie. 'n Literatuurstudie is voltooi oor besluitneming deur maatskaplikewerkmiddelvlakbestuurders, oor die organisasiestruktuur en die administratiewe funksie. 'n Empiriese studie gegrond op die literatuurstudie is gedoen ten opsigte van 'n steekproef bestaande uit dertien privaat welsynsinstansies. Die empiriese studie het besluitneming deur maatskaplikewerk middelvlakbestuurders, organisasiestrukture waarbinne besluite geneem word en besluitneming spesifiek gerig op die administratiewe funksie, ondersoek en beskryf.
