To enable the South African produceres of 'Galia' muskmelons to compete on the marketes abroad, sea freighting should be considered as alternative to air freighting due to escalating air freight tariffs. Apart from a required high sugar content, fruit should also be able to withstand a three to four week sea freight cold storage period, without the development of chilling injury (CI) or a loss in fruit firmness. In this study, the effects of various pre-harvest treatments on the quality of 'Galia' type melons were investigated under controlled environmental conditions. At sub optimum boron levels retentions of chlorophyll was poor, causing leaves to yellow prematurely which lowered the soluble solids content (SSC) of fruit. Poor net development, due to inadequate phellogen activity and poor periderm development in the fruit-peel, reulsted at sub optimum Ca and B levels which also reduced the inherent resistance of fruit to the development of CI during cold storage. by lowering the relative humidity (RH) of enclosed fruit, translocation of Ca and P to the fruit-peel increased, net development improved and less CI occured. Pre-harvest practices that may limit transpiration from fruit surface should therfore be avoided. Fruit firmness improved with elevated Ca and B levels under warm growing conditions. By increasing the nutrient solution concentration, the fruit development period was longer, fruit SSC was higher, but fruit firmness tended to be lower.
