Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. Grenades Fuzes (Ordnance) Dissertations -- Mechanical engineering Thesis (MEng.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1995. This thesis relates to the design and analysis of the dynamics of a new mechanical impact fuze for the functioning of a 40 mm low velocity grenade, which is fired from a hand held infantry weapon. The objective of this study was to design a new fuze based on a proven and well designed existing fuze, which is used on a grenade of similar calibre but fired from a weapon with a much higher muzzle velocity. The main reason for this approach was to cut down substantially on the cost and time for both the development programme and also for the production tooling required for a completely new fuze. Detailed analytical dynamic models were developed for internal ballistics, external ballistics, low angle graze impacts and the dynamics of the fuze escapement mechanism. These models were tailored to suit the requirements of the 40 mm system and give sufficiently accurate results for the design of the mechanical components of a new fuze. Various tests were conducted to evaluate the models and calibrate their parameters. The dynamic motion of the mechanism was analysed to find the operating and design parameters applicable to a fuze which must function under the different operational conditions of the 40 mm low velocity system. It can be concluded that this study indicates that the existing fuze can be converted with a minimum number of changed components and can therefore be regarded as a success. Furthermore, in the future, the analytical models can be employed as valuable tools for ammunition design and upgrading programmes.
