| spelling | oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/54897 The interaction of lectins with human male and female gametes and with endometrial cells Gabriel, Leon K. Franken, D. R. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Infertility Lectins Dissertations -- Gynecology Dissertation (PhD) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1995. The dissertation begins with a general introduction of the subject matter, firstly addressing the problem of infertility with special reference to idiopathic or poorly explained infertility. After a brief discussion of the processes involved in mammalian fertilization, molecular aspects of gamete maturation and interaction are highlighted. Since one of the primary focuses of this report is on gamete oligosaccharide and glycoprotein composition, some information on membrane biology and saccharide biochemistry is given. Finally, available literature on the interaction of lectins with mammalian gametes and lectin structures and binding specificities is reviewed. Chapters two to six incorporate the results. These are presented as separate articles, complete with specific introductory, material and methods and discussion sections. To avoid unnecessary repetition, there is therefore no separate chapter devoted to materials and methods. Complete references are cited at the end of each chapter.
