Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Reliability (Engineering) Industrial equipment -- Maintenance and repair System failures (Engineering) Maintainability (Engineering) Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Thesis (MEng) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1995. Manufacturers and suppliers of services operate in a highly competitive environment where only the best can excel. High functional efficiency, availability and reliability are critical factors in ensuring survival. Equipment reliability is influenced by inherent characteristics of the equipment, its operation and its maintenance. There therefore exists a need to establish the optimum mix of reliability improvement activities. The author made a study of techniques that can be used to increase overall equipment effectiveness. This included literature studies and the practical application and evaluation of applicable techniques. The author then defined a set of basic principles and developed a reliability improvement model. This model and the principles on which it is based, is illustrated with a number of practical applications. The author found that a knowledge of the applicable failure mechanism is of utmost importance in analysing equipment failures. The failure mechanism provides the link between the observed failures and the specific contributing factors and root causes of failure. With these contributing factors and root causes applicable condition monitoring techniques and proactive maintenance activities can be established. The failure patterns associated with the failure mechanisms determines which maintenance procedures can be effective in improving equipment reliability. Component deterioration characteristics over time and failure warning periods must be established. A thorough knowledge of the failure and its effect and criticality is essential in deciding on the best mix of reliability improvement activities.
