First word of title romanized. This thesis investigates the content of the verb זכר in Isaiah 40–55 by employing the semantic field approach. In order to construct the semantic field of each occurrence of זכר the relationships between the constituting components of the different literary units need to be examined. This includes synonyms, antonyms and the associated terms with regard to זכר. By comparing the various semantic fields the researcher is in a position to point out the different nuances in the meaning that the verb זכר might have in each occurrence. The following five nuances have been identified: 1. Actualizing the past by recalling past events to mind. 2. Inward mental activity, i.e. meditate, think about or consider. 3. Judicial procedure. 4. Cultic use, i.e. call upon YHWH’s name. 5. Election term. Within this semantic framework it can be concluded with little doubt that the rendering of the verb זכר as “to remember” is not only inadequate, but also misleading.
