Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. The main objective of this thesis Is to evaluate the state of photovoltaic energy in South Africa. This is done by describing the major physical parameters that influence the performance of a photovoltaic cell. A market study describe the South African PV market from a quantitative as well as qualitative point of view. This is done by determining the total number of households in regions that favour PV energy that can possible convert to PV systems. Another measurement of the total possible market is the amount of money that is spend monthly in these regions on energy. The market study includes a study of current PV products and suppliers in the market as well as the cost of the products.
