Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Alcoholics -- Rehabilitation Recovering alcoholics -- Psychology Anxiety Depression, Mental Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. The relationship between negative emotions and coping strategies in alcoholics was investigated in a group of 53 recently detoxified alcoholic patients (mean age 37.6 years). Correlations were sought between coping styles (measured by the Coping Strategy Indicator) and anxiety (measured by the S-scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), depression (measured by the Beck Depression Inventory) and biographic variables. Approximately 77% of the patients were at least mildly depressed and 72% experienced above average anxiety levels. Female patients made more use of a social support-seeking strategy than did male patients. Less educated, younger patients made higher use of an avoidant strategy. A significant positive correlation was found between an avoidant coping strategy and both anxiety and depression. A significant negative correlation was found between a problem-solving strategy and depression. An avoidant coping strategy emerged as a significant positive predictor of anxiety and depression, while a problem-solving coping strategy emerged as a significant negative predictor of anxiety and depression. these findings suggest that interventions aimed at more effective use of problem-solving coping strategies, as opposed to avoidance, may improve the success rate of alcohol rehabilitation programmes.
