Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Maintenance -- Management Industrial equipment -- Maintenance and repair Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. This study concerns the development and testing of a quantitative approach for improving the process of managing breakdown maintenance. The objective of this approach is the simulated obtaining of time-compression of the breakdown maintenance management process cycle through, in this case, information enablement of the maintenance management process. It has been stated that information is the ingredient that holds the management of maintenance together. It also provides the basis for the organisation to take action in line with the objectives of maintenance. The action or series of actions can be equated to a management process. As these objectives need to be reached in an efficient way, it is obvious that the process needs to be optimised accordingly. The argument then pursued is that information and its technology is a vehicle to enable the improvement of such a management process by realising time-compression of the management process cycle. In order to quantify the improvement, the Soft Systems Methodology is used as an instrument of enquiry to present the real world situation, with the help of simulation modelling based on the experience of the management process owners. Once the current or as-is situation is understood, a fresh understanding of how to improve this situation is elicited through the systems thinking process of the Soft Systems Methodology. This is then translated back to the real world situation so that the required changes to the simulation model of the current situation can be applied. The new or to-be model is then re-run to obtain and present the quantification of the improvement.
