Chi-square test Goodness-of-fit tests Mathematics -- Data processing Dissertations -- Mathematical statistics Thesis (M. Comm.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. In many statistical problems the distribution of a random variable is unknown. This unknown distribution can be important for further statistical analysis. Goodness-of-fit tests are often employed to determine whether a random variable has a certain theoretical distribution. Two well know goodness-of-fit tests are the X2 goodness-of-fit test (originally formulated for discrete data) and the Komogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test (originally formulated for continuous data). This study concentrates on these two goodness-of-fit tests.
