Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Decision support systems Expert systems (Computer science) -- Industrial applications Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Thesis (MEng) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. Manufacturing as a means of creating wealth and prosperity is becoming increasingly important, together with the associated technologies and management tools. The use of decision support systems (DSS) or expert systems is a relatively easy but effective technique to bring the use of advanced manufacturing technologies closer to the new breed of relatively unskilled manufacturing managers. There is a wide use of several types of decision support systems in all aspects of manufacturing in industrialised countries. Because of a difference in the social and political structure of the labour force, it will however not be possible to simply apply these systems into a Southern African environment. Tailoring of the DSS will therefore be required to accommodate the differences. These DSS could include the management and control of selective automation processes and perhaps an SA breed of CIM. To succeed in this venture, a focused effort from manufacturing researchers in partnership with software developers will be required. The main objective of this thesis project was to carry out extensive literature studies on state-of-the-art DSS in manufacturing and to use this expertise to develop and test some relevant systems. In this way, a particular field of DSS in manufacturing was mastered. The results of the literature study as well as the developed DSS, are discussed in this thesis report.
