This thesis describes the design, implementation and evaluation of a store-and-forward system for the SUNSAT microsatellite. The various components required to implement such a system are identified and their design and implementation are described. Key aspects of importance are low-cost and minimum resource design. These are mainly influenced by the choice of the communication link characteristics. With an appropriate choice, small, low-cost ground terminals can be used. The system design is presented as three separate components: ground terminal hardware, packet communication protocol, and global software. Each of these is designed from preliminary specifications based on the available resources as well as user and system requirements for applications such as tracking and data collection. The ground terminals constitute the commercial component of the ground segment of the system and will perform the functions of uploading and downloading data to/from the SUNSAT satellite. Packet communication protocols are investigated and will perform the function of efficient data transfer on the radio communication link. The third component, system software, is required to complete both the space and ground segment of the store-and-forward system. Finally, the construction and testing of a prototype ground terminal is described and this prototype is then used to demonstrate the functionality of the packet communication protocol and the system software.
