Power electronics Electric current converters Electric current regulators Electric controllers Dissertations -- Engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. The design and experimental evaluation of a microprocessor based controller is presented. The need arose for a modular and flexible controller for the experimental evaluation of current control algorithms. The thesis gives a comparison of current regulators running on different hardware platforms, ranging from simple analog circuits, to micro-controllers and Digital Signal Processors. These systems are evaluated according to performance, complexity and cost. Problems during the practical implement tion led to farther studies of critical hardware areas, mainly the analog to digital converter stage. It was found that this stage plays a crucial part in the overall performance of the controller. Additional control algorithms should be implemented and evaluated, including optimal controllers like the cost function regulator, and a comparison made between the relative performance of the pulse width and discrete pulse modulation schemes.
