In this thesis the author describes the design of the main on-board computer for the Sunsat microsatellite. A user requirement specification is drawn up to detail the design goals. Using this specification the choice of processor (an 80386SL) is motivated. Having decided on a processor, the author draws up a complete technical specification and uses this to detail the complete design process. This process is broken down into a high level design during which block diagrams are used to show how the system components will interconnect. A detailed design is then performed, which results in the schematic diagrams for the system. Emphasis is placed on the special requirements of the design due to its intended space use. Test methods to ensure high reliability and low power consumption are described. The design was implemented and the debugging process is also described, together with an evaluation of performance.
