Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Artificial satellites McGraw-Hill series in electrical engineering Computer architecture Interactive computer systems Dissertations -- Engineering Thesis (MEng) -- Stellenbosch University, 1996. A satellite onboard computer is an unique system that is required to perform its function in two important environments. The first environment consists of extreme temperature, pressure and radiation conditions. Secondly there are design constraints including high component density, low power consumption and the necessary performance specifications that must be met. The onboard computer has to function in both these environments with a degree of reliability. The aim of this thesis was to design and evaluate the Secondary Onboard Computer for SUNSAT. The computer had to be designed to meet the functional specifications, using the 386EX as processor, and already defined interfaces with other subsystems. Other than these the design and evaluation had to take the above mentioned environments into account. For this goal a design and evaluation framework was created, that served as a general template for the execution of the thesis. Concepts such as reliability, simplicity and complexity, as well as redundancy came to the fore as important factors that had to be addressed in an integrated manner. This resulted in several compromises in realising an optimal solution. A design is presented meeting all the functional specifications. The realisation is viewed to be an optimal solution within the SUNSAT mission and the role played by the Secondary Computer in this framework.
