Scholastic under-achievement is defined in the literature as a condition where a pupil's achievement is below what is expected of him according to his mental ability. It therefore often happens that attention is focused only on the individual's internal abilities in trying to assess his performance. Apart from the internal factors a child possesses there are, however, many other factors which could also have a possible influence on scholastic achievement. One of the most important ones, which should never be ignored, is the family that a child belongs to. The child is an integral part of his family and this is where the formation of his identity primarily takes place. The way in which his family functions therefore greatly influences the perceptions a child develops of himself and his family. The adolescent phase is a period of change and adaption for most adolescents and their families. This developmental phase is demanding and requires a gradual adaptation in the parent-child-relationship with the emphasis on gaining greater self-efficiency in place of previous dependency on the parents. This study was undertaken to investigate whether there were any indicative differences between the perceptions of family functioning of adolescents who achieved well scholastically and the perceptions of adolescents who under-achieved.
