Dept. of Educational Psychology. Educational counseling -- South Africa Student assistance programs -- South Africa Life skills Dissertations -- Education Proefskrif (M. Ed.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1996. The need for a comprehensive and sustained guidance programme for schools has always been emphasised by researchers. A situational analysis at a local school for pupils with special educational needs (School X), however, has revealed serious shortcomings in this regard. This prompted the present study (along with an earlier HSRC investigation at the school concerned). The investigation formed part of a qualitative team research project to develop a general life skills programme for that specific school that could be implemented by the established teacher-consultants team. The empirical investigation revealed six categories of life skills in which the pupils were found to be deficient. A study of the literature also confirmed the actuality of these six categories, which then formed the basis for the programme. These categories are personal skills, social skills, interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving skills and decision-making skills, vocational skills and thinking skills.
