The goal of this study may be expressed as follows: To design an epistemologically tenable pastoral model which can function - in conjunction with other psychopsychiatric helping models, as a component of a clinical therapeutic team effort - to mediate a new understanding of God's involvement with individuals suffering from anxiety, to the point where they work through their anxiety with the courage engendered by faith. The study proceeds from the hermeneutic question: how can the pastor act as mediator so that sufferers from anxiety will reinterpret themselves and their potentialities in the light of Scripture? The assumption is that if such people were to reconceptualise themselves and their world on the basis of a new understanding of self and world, they will gain the courage of faith that will enable them to actualise themselves meaningfully within their desperate situation.
