Resistance in Botrytis cinerea to dicarboximide fungicides is a well-recorded phenomenon world-wide. These fungicides have been used extensively during the past 10–15 years in table grape vineyards where, after veraison, conditions are often favourable for disease development. Although the risk of the pathogen developing resistance to these fungicides is considered high, there are as yet no reports of major control failure under vineyard conditions in South Africa. Growers are, however, concerned about the likelihood of the appearance, increase, and rapid dissemination of dicarboximide resistant isolates among vineyards in the Western Cape. This could result in the inefficacy of one of the key measures in the integrated disease control programme, which is heavily relied on during disease conducive periods after veraison. The objective of this study was therefore to survey for dicarboximide resistance in B. cinerea in vineyards of the Western Cape, to characterize resistant isolates, and to examine changes in resistance frequency to dicarboximide fungicides of the B. cinerea population in vineyards under different dicarboximide schedules. Since resistance in B. cinerea to benzimidazole fungicides is also widespread, and these fungicides have been used in South African table grape vineyards, isolates were also surveyed for benzimidazole sensitivity.
