Dept. of Afrikaans and Dutch. Dissertations -- Afrikaans language Tesis (MA) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1996. Lexical items sometimes form predictable syntagmatic relations (e.g. blonde x hair). These relations are formed when the meaning of one or both of the lexical items are encapsulated in the meaning of the other. My thesis explores these syntagmatic lexical relations. I concentrate on the manifestation of these relations in Afrikaans, but use the insights from research done in other languages. Conclusions are formulated within the framework of Langacker's Cognitive Grammar. They are based on an extensive data analysis, examples of which are provided in the addenda.
