ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis consists of three articles for publication. The first is a review article of the trends in gladiolus breeding. Cytological studies, the origin and evolution of commercial gladiolus cultivars, breeding for disease and insect resistance, winter flowering gladiolus cultivars, the presence of fragrance and the blue colour in gladiolus are discussed. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis bestaan uit drie artikels vir publikasie. Die eerste is 'n oorsigartikel wat handel oor algemene gladiolus teling. Sitologiese studies, die oorsprong en evolusie van kommersiële gladioluskultivars, teling vir siekte-en insekweerstand, winterblommende gladioluskultivars, die teenwoordigheid van geur en die bloukleur in gladiolus word bespreek.
