ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Blaaskans - die bewegings van Flip Nel is discussed as a topical novel. Topical South African elements which are looked into, are among others rugby, geographical indications, political and socio-cultural realities and the Slagtersnek rebellion of 1815. The use of this controllable data results in the novel obtaining a strong reality basis. The subtle way in which Miles works with factual information in Blaaskans, leads to a strong coherence between different elements, through which specific meanings are formed and certain insights are offered. Literature and the South African society represent each other in Blaaskans, and in this thesis it is shown how the contemporary realities are applied, so that this novel becomes more than popular reading. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Blaaskans - die bewegings van Flip Nel word bespreek as 'n aktuele roman. Aktuele Suid-Afrikaanse elemente waarna gekyk word, is onder andere rugby, geografiese aanduidings, politieke en sosio-kulturele werklikhede en die Slagtersnekgeskiedenis van 1815. Deur die verwysings na hierdie kontroleerbare gegewens verkry die roman 'n sterk werklikheidsbasis. Die subtiele wyse waarop Miles met feitelike gegewens in Blaaskans omgaan, lei daartoe dat daar 'n hegte samehang tussen verskillende elemente ontstaan, waardeur spesifieke betekenisse na vore kom en sekere insigte aan die leser gebied word. Literatuur en die Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing representeer mekaar in Blaaskans, en in hierdie tesis word aangetoon hoe die eietydse werklikhede aangewend word sodat dié roman meer word as ontspanningsliteratuur.
