spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/55259 The assessment of interpersonal schemas : an evaluation of the interpersonal schema questionnaire De Villiers, Suzanne Van der Westhuizen, Le R. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Person schemas Schema-focused cognitive therapy Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. The goal of this study was to investigate the Interpersonal Schema Questionnaire (ISQ) as an assessment instrument for interpersonal schemas. The ISQ was developed by Hill and Safran (1988) who used Kiesler’s (1983) 1982 Interpersonal Circle as the basis for the ISQ. The ISQ assesses people’s expectations of how significant others (Father, Mother and Friend) will respond to various situations based on Kiesler’s Interpersonal Circle. It consists of three indices, namely the Affiliation and Control indices that correspond to the two orthogonal axes of Kiesler’s Interpersonal Circle and the Desirability index, that is the rated desirability of the expected responses. The present study was a replication of a study by Hill and Safran (1988, 1994) with a few changes such as the inclusion of an Unfamiliar Person as stimulus person, the inclusion of two additional questionnaires, namely the Personal Assertion Analysis (PAA) and the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (SAS), and the omission of the Symptom Check List-90. According to the present study the ISQ showed reasonably good test-retest reliability for all three indices. The study also confirmed Hill and Safran’s results regarding the validity of the ISQ as a translation of Kiesler’s 1982 Interpersonal Circle. The expected responses from the Unfamiliar Person were similar to the expected responses from Significant Other on the Control and Affiliation indices and similar to the expected responses from Friend on the Desirability index for certain situations. A few significant correlations between the ISQ indices and the PAA, SAS and Beck Depression Inventory were obtained. Differences in expectations from Significant Other and the Unfamiliar Person according to the different situations are discussed. In general the findings of the present study confirmed the results reported by Hill and Safran (1988, 1994). Some differences that need to be clarified in future research projects, are also pointed out.
