The depletion of stratospheric ozone focused the world’s attention on various environmental issues, more specifically on CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) in the environment. With the introduction of the Montreal Protocol and consequent phase-out of CFC’s in industries, an opportunity was created for the development of technologies to destroy CFC’s. A reductive pyrolysis unit was developed at the University of Stellenbosch in collaboration with Eskom TRI. This unit was used to investigate the destruction of chlorinated hydrocarbons, concentrating on the destruction of PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls). The existing unit was modified and used to investigate the destruction of CFC-12 (CF₂Cl₂) over a range of temperatures from 1100 °C to 2300 °C under reductive conditions. GC/MS analyses of hexane extracts of the carbon product and gas samples showed that no chlorinated/halogenated compounds were present. HCN is of the utmost importance to the South African mining industry, and a demand exists for HCN production at lower cost. The existing reductive pyrolysis unit was therefore adapted for the production of HCN. A number of tests were performed to investigate the feasibility of this process. These tests proved to be successful and prompted the design, manufacturing and commissioning of a pilot plant at a mine site in the Rand area of Gauteng.
