Yield of 'Doyenné du Comice (Pyrus communis L.) is low in spite of its high blossom density. This study was undertaken to improve fruit set and production in 'Comice'. Chlormequat (500 or 1 000 mg/l), putrescine (10 or 20 mg/l) or 2,4-DP (100 or 200 mg/l) were applied as foliar sprays in autumn to study their effect on fruit set. Treatments were applied to full bearing, sixth leaf 'Comice' trees on seedling rootstock in the Koue Bokkeveld area (33° S, 19° 21' E), two weeks prior to natural leaf drop (15/04/94). Fruit set was recorded 40 days after full bloom (02/11/94) and expressed as a percentage of the number of flower clusters. At harvest (13/02/95) all the fruit were weighed and production expressed as kg of fruit per cm trunk circumference. A random sample of ten fruit per replication was used to determine the average fruit weight, length/diameter ratio and seed number. Both chlormequat concentrations increased fruit set, therefore resulting in an increase in production per tree. The treatments had no influence on the average weight or the length/diameter ratio of these fruit. The increase in fruit set was probably due to a slight increase in the average seed number. The putrescine and 2,4-DP applications did not increase fruit set or production per tree. The average fruit weight was higher with a putrescine application at 20 mg/l. This could also possibly be due to the higher seed content of these fruit. No such effect occurred at the lower concentration. Fruit weight of the 2,4-DP treatment was significantly higher than that of the unsprayed control, and the length/diameter ratio was significantly reduced. Spring applications of chlormequat (500 or 1 000 mg/l), putrescine (10 or 20 mg/l) or 2,4-DP (50 or 100 mg/l) were also evaluated for possible effects on fruit set of 'Comice'. The trees were in their fifth leaf and established on seedling rootstock in the Koue Bokkeveld.
