Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Chemical Engineering. Alcohol Energy consumption Distillation Dissertations -- Chemical engineering Thesis (MEng) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1996. This study was concerned with the reduction of the energy consumption of an ethanol distillation process for the production of a potable, neutral spirit in the Wine Industry. The production plant on the KWV premises in Paarl was used as a case study for the project. The emphasis was on modifications which were not capital intensive. Experimental work was performed on the actual plant, and a full description of the process is provided. This contributed to a better understanding of the process. From observation of the actual operation of the plant it was concluded that the process lacked an effective control system, which led to alcohol losses and higher energy consumption. The principles of pinch analysis combined with process simulation indicated the scope for lowering steam consumption. The main potential saving would be to significantly reduce the water feed to the hydro-extraction column. This was demonstrated in a trial run of the plant. Design calculations showed that the next significant energy saving could be the use of vapour recompression at the base of the wine column. Alternative processes to distillation were considered and it was shown that adsorption could be combined with distillation to produce absolute alcohol with an ethanol content in excess of 99.95 vol. %. Such a scheme would enable the KWV to market absolute alcohol as an additional product.
