ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis refers to the Medium Speed Wind Tunnel (MSWT) used by the Council for Scientific and Industrial research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. A scale model wind tunnel, designed by the author, models the MSWT in order to find the flow distortion at the inlet face of the compressor. The thesis contains three-dimensional flow maps, mapped at the compressor inlet with the aid of a five-hole pneumatic probe. The main objective is to generate these maps which may indicate conditions unfavourable to the performance of the compressor. The secondary objective is to evaluate the tunnel components with regard to their stagnation pressure loss contributions. The thesis itself consists of four main elements. Firstly, preparation of the instrumentation, which includes the five-hole probe calibration. Secondly, to design and manufacture a scale- model wind tunnel. Thirdly, development of software capable of sampling the five probe pressures and controlling the automated scanning device. Finally, sampling the flow field at the compressor inlet that includes the processing of this data. The thesis found the transition section to contribute a comparatively large stagnation pressure loss, causing a substantial increase in the compressor load. The compressor inlet data indicated a high level of stagnation pressure distortion. This may have an adverse effect on the surge margin of the compressor, limiting its operational range.
