Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Mechatronics Automatic control Transducers Electronic measurements Linear control systems Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1997. The integration of mechanical, electronic, electrical and computer equipment to form a computerised automation solution is nowadays referred to as mechatronics. In this thesis the generic components and structure of a mechatronic system are discussed. The focus is on the basic components necessary for a computerised automation solution in the manufacturing industry requiring the automatic measurement of linear displacement. In order to develop a classification system for cases where linear displacement measurement are used, existing applications in industry were investigated. In addition, an investigation of locally available displacement transducers was undertaken as part of the development of a pilot application to meet the requirements of an industrial partner interested in the automation of manual operated machines. The development of the required pilot application took place in the Structures Laboratory of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch, where a pope bending machine was available to be automated for the purposes of this study. In this process a hydraulic cylinder, controlled by a high response proportional valve, was used as the actuator. Most of the effort went into the compilation of a user friendly computer control program, compiled in Turbo Pascal, included in the appendices of the thesis. The solution provides the user and operator with a graphical user interface for visual information about the process. Finally, the system response is analysed from a control theory perspective.
