ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A multi-disciplinary approach was followed towards a systematic revision of Lobostemon Lehm, a member of the Boraginaceae The revision consists of an alpha taxonomic treatment supplemented by a detailed study of the leaf Indumentum, leaf anatomy and morphology of the leaves flowers. stigmas styles and fruits. The anthocyanin composition and chromosome numbers of the different species was also determined. Species descriptions was compiled using 119 morphological characters with the help of the DELTA program. In total, 28 species, including two new species, are recognised. The delimitation of taxa was complicated by the variability of some characters and the lack of variation in others. The macro- and micromorphological characters are illustrated by means of line drawings and light- and electronmicroscope photos Diagnostic characters of taxonomic use were largely confined to the flowers and leaves. The occurrence of hairy staminal scales, bilobed stigmas, and a basic chromosome number of X = 7, sets Lobostemon apart from closely related genera like Echium L. and Holostigma (Gmel.) Böhle & Klotz. A nomenclatural study of the taxa was undertaken, A phenetic analysis was done with the NTSYS and PHYLLIP programs. A cladistic analysts was done with HENNIG86. The cladistic analysis resulted in revised sectional delimitations. Sections Trichotom, and Lobostemon are well supported by a number of synapomorphic characters. Section Fruticosi has a number of unresolved branches due to a lack of hierarchial characters Section Argentei is viewed to be basal and section Lobostemon the most advanced In LoboMemon. The geographical distributions of the recognised sections are provided and discussed. The origins and the phylogenetic position of the species are also speculated on.
