Dept. of Psychology. Conflict management Marital conflict Satisfaction Marriage Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1997. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is one conflict management style, as defined by Kilmann and Thomas (1977), that correlated more significantly with marital satisfaction than the others. Additionally, spousal satisfaction with the way in which conflict is managed in the marriage as well as gender differences were also examined. Conflict management style, marital satisfaction and satisfaction with conflict management style were measured with the Thomas Kilmann MODE instrument and two sub scales of the ENRICH marital inventory, respectively. Fifty-seven coloured married couples that had been married for at least ten years took part in the study. The results showed the highest correlation between the collaborative conflict management style, marital satisfaction and spousal satisfaction with conflict management. The results were also interpreted in terms of cultural and gender differences.
