South Africa is in the midst of a transformation process at different levels of society. At an educational level there is a need at present for more information regarding learners across the cultural and ethnical spectrum. This information is essential for the effective planning and structuring of education and teaching in South Africa, so that every learner can have the optimum opportunity to develop into an effectively functioning adult. In order to provide for this need, a comprehensive research project has been launched from within the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Stellenbosch. In this research project an American personality questionnaire, the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children, which was developed to measure the personality types and personality preferences of learners, was translated into Afrikaans and is being standardized and applied to the South African context. Researchers are investigating tendencies regarding the personality types and personality preferences of Xhosa, Afrikaans and English speaking learners who represent different backgrounds and come from different communities. This study forms part of the comprehensive research project. Adolescence is a critical developmental phase during which people develop from childhood into adulthood. In this phase the development of the self concept is critical, especially because it forms the basis of the development of the personality. Educators can support the adolescent in the development of the self concept if they have sufficient and accurate knowledge concerning the self concept. Information about the self concept in this study was gathered with regard to personality types and preferences. The specific aim was to determine if a discrepancy exists between the perception of the self and the perception of the ideal self with regard to personality types and preferences of grade eight learners. The intruments which were used in this study were the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children (MMTIC) for English speaking learners and the "Murphy-Meisgeier Persoonlikheidsvraelys vir Kinders (MMvK)" for Afrikaans speaking learners. They are based upon the theory of C. G. Jung. To determine whether an empirical descrepancy exists between the perception of the self and the perception of the ideal self with regard to personality types and preferences of grade eight learners, the questionnaires were used twice with the same group of learners. In order to distinguish between the perception of the self and the perception of the ideal self an additional instruction was given to the learners with each measurement. The sample consisted of 203 grade eight learners from a secondaiy dual medium school in the South Western Cape. The results were also analysed to determine whether a discrepancy exists between the perception of the self and the perception of the ideal self with regard to personality types and preferences of different sexes and different language groups. The results were analysed to determine the distribution of personality types and preferences, the number of pupils who changed their preferences, and the direction in which the preferences changed. Average differences in the directions of change regarding preferences were also calculated and each item was analysed to determine at which items most of the learners changed their preferences. The most important finding suggests that a discrepancy exists between the perception of the self and the perception of the ideal self with regard to personality types and preferences of grade eight learners. A discrepancy also exists with regard to different sexes and different language groups. The educational and teaching implications of the findings are discussed in the final chapter.
